Men Who Foster
A course designed to look at the challenges faced by men in foster care and strategies to manage these challenges.
Below is a sample session plan for a half day course:
10.00 Introduction and open
• Finding out the carers role in the home (second carer etc)
• Finding out the placements they have
• Introducing self
• Introducing course
10.20 What can men offer?
• Split into groups and discuss what men in foster care can offer
• Feedback and group discussion
• Look at reports and newspaper articles on subject
10.50 Why are there differences?
• Identify and establish the differences
• Discussion – why are there differences, national statistics
11.15 Safer caring
• Discussion – what safer care issues do men face
• Look at different scenarios and how they affect the carer
• General good practice
• Experience sharing
• How to keep yourself and others safe
(There will be a short break during this activity)
12.15 Learning from each other
• What can men learn from women who foster
• What can women learn form men who foster
12.45 Questions and close
The Cost
This course can be delivered to a group of carers from one organisation at a cost of £400 for a maximum of 20 people. This will be delivered at the agencies own venue. The cost of this course includes a consultation visit with the trainer to ensure that the content of the session is tailored to the needs of the company and the client group.
